Three Steps for Successful Breeding
If you’re a first-time breeder, there are several considerations to keep in mind, to ensure that your mare is healthy enough to bring a young foal into the world. Consider seeking guidance from three professionals who will help make the process easier.
Veterinarian
A veterinarian will check your mare to make sure that it is healthy enough for foaling. It’s an important step to avoid surprises and ensure a healthy process for your horse. Any number of issues could rule out a mare for foaling, such as an unhealthy uterus, damaged udder, or infections.
Foaling Facility
Mares require significant attention while pregnant. Some vets recommend foaling facilities which provide round-the-clock care. Such a facility will keep tabs on a pregnant horse, and resolve any problems that may crop up, such as swelling of the legs, called oedema.
Accountant
Taking care of a pregnant mare is no small feat. It’s pretty expensive, costing thousands. You’ll have to pay for a breeder, vet exams, vitamins, and extra food and water. Not to mention, a breeder has additional expenses once the foal arrives. Check with your accountant to ensure that your budget supports your horse breeding ambitions.
