The Most Famous Horses in Horseracing History

Horse racing is one of the oldest sports in the world. Many horses and the jockeys riding them have entered history books for their great performances. Some of the horses which take part in these competitions have made themselves names that are still talked about decades after their exit from the racing scene. Such horses include:

Secretariat

Secretariat was commonly referred to as Big Red. He is arguably the best thoroughbred that has ever lived. Big Red was able to set a record in each big event in the US. His largest win was in the Belmont Stakes when he won by a margin of 31 lengths. There is no horse which has won the Triple Crown competition with such a margin. He was crowned horse of the year in 1972 and 1973. He managed to earn about 1.3 million in the period he competed.

Man o’ War

He was a popular figure in the sport in 1920. Man o’ War managed to win 20 out of 21 races in 1920. He had the longest stride in the history of horse racing, about 28-feet. His popularity credited the growth of horse racing in North America. It is a shame that Man o’ War was denied by his owner the chance to participate in the US Triple Crown.

Seattle Slew

He was the first horse to win the Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes and US Triple Crown without losing beforehand. He was also the winner of Three-Year-Old, Older Male Horse and Champion Juvenile Colt from 1976 to 1978. He was America’s horse of the year in 1977.

Winx

She has a world record of winning 25 grade 1 races. She set another record at Moonee Valley where she got four consecutive wins. Winx was the Australian horse of the year from 2015 to 2019.

Horse racing is still a popular sport with amazing horses, but the records that were set by the above and the names they made will last a long time.
